It is a giant, climbing, succulent hemiepiphytic vine with robust green stems and thick, leathery leaves. It belongs to the Vanilla pompona species complex. A scientific revision in 2025 clarified its definition, separating the populations from the dry regions of Argentina and the Cerrado under another name, Vanilla argentina. True chamissonis, on the other hand, is a specialist of the humid coastal forests of Brazil.
Where does it grow and why is it threatened?
Chamissonis is strictly endemic to the humid forest regions of Brazil, found in all five major regions of the country at low altitudes, even growing on lichen-covered trunks in the coastal restingas, sometimes just two meters above sea level. This proximity to the coast is also its weakness: it is classified as Endangered because its restinga habitat is being steadily eroded by urbanization and fragmentation. Like many wild vanillas, it is a discreet treasure jeopardized by coastal development.

What does its pod look like?
It is a large, fleshy pod, twelve to seventeen centimeters long and two to three and a half centimeters wide, shaped like a slightly curved club with a triangular cross-section and rounded edges. Yellow-green on the vine, it turns dark brown and shiny at maturity. Its most notable feature is its soft pericarp and internal cavity entirely filled with moist pulp, bursting with thousands of tiny, hard seeds.

Why does it take eighteen months to ripen?
This is the most astonishing chapter. Where Bourbon ripens in eight to nine months, chamissonis requires eighteen months of development on the vine. This slowness, combined with its soft, indehiscent fruits, is what biologists call an evolutionary anachronism. Emerging millions of years ago, chamissonis designed its large fleshy pods to be eaten and dispersed by the South American megafauna of the Miocene and Pliocene—giant animals that are now extinct.
When this megafauna died out, the vine lost its dispersers. Only one modern animal took over the role: Azara's agouti, a small forest rodent known as cutia in Brazil. It alone tolerates the tannins and knows how to peel the pod to avoid the irritating crystals. Better yet, its digestive acids erode the extremely hard seed coat, providing an essential scarification without which the seeds would never germinate. In other words, without the agouti, there would be no new Chamisso vanilla. It is a mutualism of dizzying fragility.
