The origin of Vanilla tahitensis has given rise to various hypotheses over the years. Some have also considered the possibility that Vanilla tahitensis is a derived form of Vanilla planifolia.

After studies, we have known for several years that  Vanilla tahitensis is in reality a hybrid between Vanilla planifolia and a species close to Vanilla odorata . Thus, the Polynesian vanilla tree must now be called Vanilla x tahitensis , the "x" indicating that it is a hybrid rather than a distinct species. The Preparation Process
