WHAT IS THE ACAI BERRY?

Acai , also known by the scientific name Euterpe oleracea , and called wasai or pinot noir in Guyana and Brazil, is a palm tree that flourishes in the marshy and arid areas of northern Brazil, mainly in the state of Pará . But you will also find it in the state of Bahia in Brazil.

This region represents approximately 60% of Brazil's annual production of acai , a berry with many facets both botanically and culturally.

The acai palm stands out for its elegant appearance, reaching a remarkable height of 20 meters . It has 10 to 14 palms measuring approximately 2 meters long, giving the tree a graceful silhouette. Like any palm, older leaves droop to the ground, contributing to the species' majestic aesthetic.

The acai flowers appear in small, yellow clusters , bringing a touch of delicacy to the tree. However, the true essence of acai lies in its fruits, which begin to appear from the fourth year .

However, it is necessary to wait until the  ninth year for the acai to reach maturity and become profitable for producers. The fruits, ripening in clusters of purplish, almost black hues , can reach an impressive diameter of 2 cm .

Beyond its visual appeal, acai is also praised for its exceptional nutritional qualities.

We see online that acai is rich in antioxidants, fiber and essential fatty acids and that is why  this berry has become a global superfood sensation.

It is also said that acai's health-promoting properties have contributed to its growing popularity, particularly in wellness and nutrition-focused circles.

But no, it is its flavor, its purple color which will make this prodigious B from the Amazon, the new star of desserts but also of starters.

THE LEGEND OF ACAI ACCORDING TO NATIVE MYTHOLOGY

Before the existence of the city of Belém, capital of the state of Pará in the Amazon, a very numerous tribe occupied this region.

Most reports regarding the legend indicate that at this time, food was scarce, and life was becoming increasingly difficult for the Tupi tribe , faced with the need to feed all of its members.

The leader of the tribe, named  Itaki , found himself faced with a painful decision.

In order to limit the increase of his tribe, he decided to sacrifice all the newborn children.

One day, Itaki 's daughter , named Iaçã , gave birth to a beautiful daughter, also dedicated to sacrifice. Iaçã , plunged into despair, cried every night over the loss of her little daughter.

For several days, Iaçã remained secluded in his teepee. Then, in a heartbreaking prayer, she asked Abaçai , the god of forest spirits, to show her father an alternative to help their people without having to sacrifice their children.

One night with a full moon, Iaçã heard the cry of a child. Coming out of her teepee, she discovered her daughter smiling at the foot of a slender palm tree. In a burst of happiness, she rushed to kiss him, but as she hugged him, her daughter mysteriously transformed into a palm tree.

The next day, Iaçã 's lifeless body was discovered, holding the trunk of the palm tree with a radiant smile and his eyes fixed on the top of the tree, decorated with dark fruits.

Itaki then ordered the fruit to be harvested, and the resulting preparation was a reddish beverage, named açai in honor of Iaçã . This wine feeds the entire tribe, thus ending the famine.

In gratitude to the god Abaçai and his daughter Iaçã , the palm tree was called pinot , the weeping palm, and its fruit, the fruit of happiness and abundance . Thus, acai became not only a source of sustenance, but also the symbol of life, sacrifice and prosperity for the tribe.

WHERE TO FIND PINOT PALM OR ACAI OR BRAZIL?

Acai , also known as the Pinot palm (Euterpe oleracea) , has its exclusive origin in South America . In Brazil, it is abundantly present in various states, notably in the state of Pará , but also in Amapá , Maranhão , Amazonas , and Mata Atlantica . The first two 4 states are the main producers of acai in Brazil . From 2010 to 2022, the growth of acai plantations has increased by 675% . You see the importance of this fruit for Brazil .

The Mata Atlantica , a primary forest located in Brazil, is particularly representative in the Rio de Janeiro region , where the Pinot palm finds a suitable habitat for its growth .

Native to tropical regions of South America , acai thrives naturally in the humid, swampy areas of the Amazon . It is commonly found in the states of Para , Amapá , Acre , and Amazonas in Brazil . Tropical rainforests , along rivers and flooded areas, provide the preferred environment for the growth of acai, sometimes reaching an impressive height of 25 meters . Warm and humid climatic conditions , combined with soils rich in organic matter , are essential for the optimal development of this palm species .

Acai production in Brazil extends across several Amazon states , including Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Maranhão, Pará, Amapá, and Roraima . This geographic diversity highlights the importance of acai as an iconic crop and a major economic source for local populations in these regions . Acai fruits are harvested primarily for their pulp, which is used in making popular products such as smoothies and acai bowls , contributing to the popularity of this valuable resource

WHY THE PINOT PALM IS IDEAL FOR REFORESTATION

The pinot palm , also known by the scientific name Elaeis guineensis , is emerging as a prime option for reforestation due to its many ecological and economic qualities. First of all, its rapid growth is a major asset. Compared to other species, the Pinot palm reaches maturity much more quickly, allowing for faster forest regeneration.

Additionally, this tropical tree exhibits an exceptional ability to adapt to various soil types, ranging from sandy to clayey soils. Its resistance to disease and pests also contributes to its robustness, making the pinot palm a sustainable choice for reforestation.

Economically, the Pinot palm is renowned for its versatility. It is widely used in the palm oil industry, providing a cost-effective source of vegetable oil. This culture can thus constitute a source of income for local communities, promoting economic development while encouraging the conservation of existing forests.

Additionally, the pinot palm acts as a carbon sink, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. By effectively capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it contributes to the fight against global warming.

In summary, the pinot palm stands out for its rapid growth , adaptability, resistance and economic potential, making it an ideal choice for reforestation with significant environmental and socio-economic benefits.

HOW IS ACAI CULTIVATED

Açaizeiros can be grown either in full sun or shade , thus providing various options for exploiting areas covered with forests, tree crops such as rubber trees, cloves, cocoa trees, etc., or previously cleared herbaceous vegetation. It is essential to note, however, that açaizeiros grown in full sun show higher productivity than those maintained in shade .

Concerning the production of plants , the selection of mother plants must be carried out taking into account the diameter of the stem , the number of leaves and the phytosanitary state of the plants. It is crucial that the selected açaizeiros are located near other individuals of the same species in the growing phase to minimize the effects of forced self-pollination , which can affect the vigor of the resulting plants. The plants chosen must be correctly identified .

The fruits should be harvested when they display a black and opaque , almost waxy color. It is recommended to only pick fruits that are part of a cluster , excluding those that have fallen to the ground. When harvesting, a plastic sheet should be placed under the canopy of the plants to collect the cluster, ensuring fresh seeds with a high germination rate are obtained .

As for seed preparation , germination time varies depending on local climatic conditions , time of year , stage of fruit maturity , presence of pericarp (pulp) , and other factors. Seeds from undepolved fruits have slow and patchy germination under normal conditions, requiring three to six months to reach full germination . However, if they are depolposed and placed in favorable conditions of humidity and temperature (around 28°C ), germination begins around 20 days after sowing, with more than 80% germination at 35 days , and the process is completed no later than two months after sowing.

Regarding pulping , a simple method for small productions consists of washing the fruits, placing them in a plastic bag (fertilizer bag type), draining the excess water before closing it, letting it rest in the shade for two to three days, then wash the fruits under running water, rubbing them against each other or on a sieve. Another method is to immerse the fruits in water at a temperature between 35 and 40°C for about 15 minutes , then wash the seeds under running water to remove the rest of the pulp.

Finally, sowing must be done quickly because the seeds quickly lose their germination power . It can be carried out directly on site, in a nursery for later transplanting in black polyethylene bags, or directly in polyethylene bags.

WILD HARVEST AÇAI AND THE DANGERS FOR BIODIVERSITY A SUMMARY OF THE GLOBO ARTICLE

Acai, the emblematic fruit of the Amazon, has seen spectacular growth in production over the past decades, generating significant income for producers, particularly in the state of Pará. However, a new study by Brazilian scientists highlights the environmental consequences of this expansion.

The rapid increase in açai cultivation has led to a significant loss of biodiversity in the Amazon , with iconic tree species such as samaúma and jatobá disappearing in favor of acai palm plantations. This phenomenon, called "açaïsation", is considered a threat to the Amazon ecosystem.

Researchers observed a marked decline in plant diversity in acai monoculture areas, with potential consequences for the ecological balance of the region. “Açaisation” leads to a reduction in the functional richness of the flora and an increased vulnerability of the socio-ecological system, particularly for local economies dependent on monoculture.

The regions studied in the state of Pará have seen a massive increase in açai production, which represents approximately 95% of global production. Global demand has exploded, with Brazilian exports increasing almost 15,000% over the past decade.

Researchers are calling for a review of current acai production standards, emphasizing that the rules in force since 2013 are not sufficient to preserve the diversity of estuarine flora. They also call for the establishment of a reforestation program with the replanting of native species to preserve the ecological balance while maintaining the cultural and economic importance of acai cultivation.

Despite assurances from producers and industries that sustainable production standards will be respected, scientists warn of the potential environmental impacts of the acai boom in the Amazon.

This is why Le Comptoir de Toamasina has been purchasing its first importation of acai since 2017, an acai that comes from a global project that promotes the Amazon forest and the workers.
There is no worker who climbs the trees using pitches but forklifts, the employees will have a salary and benefits such as health insurance and the children must be sent to school.

This acai is more expensive to purchase but it guarantees a better life for the employees working the acai, a fixed salary, private health insurance, children in school.

Officially, six types of acai have been listed, which we present here to expand your knowledge of this fascinating fruit:

Açai Roxo or Preto Recognizable by its traditional color and shape, this açai is harvested in clusters from the açai palm in northern Brazil, notably in Belém do Pará. Its color ranges from light purple to dark purple.

Açai Branco Also called açai tinga, this type is popular in Belém do Pará. Although less common, its price is slightly higher than traditional acai. Surprisingly, its pulp and color are green, even reminiscent of avocado.

Açai Açu Originally from the Peruvian part of the Amazon, açai Açu offers a more pronounced taste than açai roxo. With a pulp 70% more abundant than that of classic acai, its harvesting and refrigeration require special attention.

Acai Espada Distinguished by its cluster with multiple branches, this type of acai has a unique shape with primary, secondary and tertiary branches.

Açai Sangue de Boi Its name refers to its reddish color, similar to the blood of an ox. Less common for consumption due to its distinct taste and more pasty consistency.

Acai Chumbinho Extremely small in size, with a weight of up to 1 gram, this acai can be white or purple in color. Explore the culinary richness of acai by favoring the roxo and branco varieties, appreciated both in Brazilian and global cuisine for their delicious flavors.

Acai is available in frozen pulp form, but purchasing acai powder, always 100% pure, is recommended.

Integrate acai into your smoothies, yogurts and sprinkle it on your fruit for a delicious taste.

Acai appears to rival, or even surpass, other superfruits such as goji, mangosteen and noni.
