Over 50,000 km traveled across Brazil to meet producers

"We don't say 'we are going to meet producers' or 'we will source locally.' Our Ranger Expeditions have already done it, covering over 50,000 km across Brazil."

Aboard his Ford Ranger, Arnaud Sion has already driven over 50,000 kilometers across Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Espírito Santo to meet producers of vanilla, superfoods, and Tonka beans—not to promise he will, but because he already has, expedition after expedition. This space is dedicated to journalists wishing to get a sneak peek at the highlights of Le Comptoir de Toamasina, its Brazilian brand Abaçai, and our latest product launches.

An expertise unmatched in France

The only French player closely tracking native Brazilian vanillas

While almost the entire global vanilla market relies on a single species, Vanilla planifolia, Arnaud Sion made the pioneering choice in 2015 to explore the richness of native South American species. Brazil alone is home to over 35 species of indigenous vanilla—a scientific territory practically unexplored by French traders.

This foundational work establishes Arnaud Sion as a trailblazer and one of the rare French experts closely monitoring scientific advancements in native Brazilian vanillas, moving far beyond mere trading.

Pepper: a second field obsession

Over 25 rare peppers and berries listed, compared to 3-5 in a typical gourmet shop

Where most retailers limit themselves to black, white, and sometimes pink pepper, Arnaud Sion has built a range of over 25 rare peppers and berries, sourced across six actively monitored terroirs: Madagascar, Brazil, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Indonesia. A scope that very few French players, even specialized ones, can claim.

This expertise does not stop at sourcing: it encompasses a deep understanding of official grading nomenclatures (such as the Brazilian Brasil Asta / 1 / 2 classification), precise botanical distinctions between often confused cousin species, and authentication methods taught by the producers themselves.

Consistent groundwork, pepper by pepper, builds an authority that simple trading can never achieve.

Le Comptoir de Toamasina Products

Le Comptoir de Toamasina is a family business that began its adventure in 2010 with the discovery of the Great Island by its creator, Arnaud Sion. He had an idea: why not offer vanilla beans with a story, rather than soulless commercial vanilla? Searching for vanilla farming families in Madagascar, he gradually built a product range with rural partners throughout his travels.

In 2018, Le Comptoir de Toamasina created its Brazilian brand Abaçai, specializing in the ethical sourcing and sale of açaí, acerola, guarana, and tonka beans from responsible rural agriculture. In Brazil, we have our own pickup truck to source Brazilian flavors directly from the producers, with no intermediaries.
